Busy Weekend, Prize Fighter

A busy Saturday filled with herd share deliveries, the Abingdon Farmers Market, and bush hogging. Our day of rest didn’t slow as much as we’d like. Ms. Desiree helped get cows in and pigs sorted and loaded for Monday’s ride to the processor.

I got up at 2:00 Monday morning and was loaded and on the road by 3:00 bound for NC with 8 cows and 8 hogs. Averaging over 1500 lbs, these were some of the finest cattle our farm has produced. I got back to the valley in time to help Amy get her coolers loaded for Knoxville delivery. Before they left, we sorted out 6 more hogs that I then hauled them to the processor in Abingdon. Though our freezers are ready for restocking, we still have plenty of ORVF beef and pork options.

Another batch of over 400 chicks in the brooder. Newborn baby calves are still hitting the ground running. Another 3 loads of firewood split and hauled to finish filling up the woodshed. A full woodshed still isn’t enough to heat the house for the coming winter, but it’s a fine start.

We could use some rain.

Instead of listening to audiobooks on the road to and from the processors, I mostly listened to Mumford and Sons’ latest album Prizefighter. Here’s a few lines from some of their songs:

Here

“Here's my pride, and here's my shame
Here's a trophy that bears my name
Here's all the mistakes I made
For too long
Here's the answers I never gave
Here's the calls I shoulda made
Here's a substance that I crave
All along”

The Banjo Song

“Hey, did you call? Did you fall?
Do you need someone? Do you need someone?
And hey, I'm a mess myself,
But I think I could be someone if you need someone
I was alone, it was fine, I could deny all I like
I could just push back and make believe and it was alright
But, hey, when you call, when you fall
And you need someone, I could be someone for you”

A Conversation With My Son

“The cross or the machine
It's always the same choice
The best I ever met
Had nothing and gave it all away
We'd rather be ruined than change
And die in our dread
But love your crooked neighbor
With your crooked heart”

Have a good week.
