Mountain climb, spring poems
After church on Sunday we hiked up to the top of Walker Mountain behind our house. The final stretch was more of a climb than a hike. Not sure how Carter and Wren would fare, they maintained good attitudes and made it all the way. Hallie, of course, wins the award for having the best attitude. Hasten wins the award for most falls. It was a beautiful day to be in the mountains. Though the leaves are filling in fast, there were enough trees still without leaves to see out and across the valley from the top.
We bought and brought back about 30 more pigs to the farm this week. One of them escaped and has been insistent on staying with the cows in a nearby field.
After over 6 months of burning wood in the outdoor broiler, we finally let the fire go out. It’s nice to have a break from filling it up daily, but it’s by no means a break from firewood altogether. Still cutting wood. I like it though. The kids, who have been on a fire kick lately, have often been building a fire to sit around in the evening. Not a bad way to end the day.
Yesterday we hauled 16 chicken shelters to the field to put in place. Some of them didn’t winter so well. I need to pick up some lumber today and make some repairs on about half of them before filling them with chicks from the brooder. The daily shelter pulling begins soon.
The cows are mowing through the fields. I love moving cows from field to field this time of year.
I often listen to audiobooks while farming, but this week the books I enjoyed reading most were not available on audio. Amy assigned Hallie and Hasten to write a “Spring Acrostic Poem” book. Here’s a couple of my favorites:
