Snow Days, Chocolate Milk Party

A snowy week on the farm. The kids loved sledding and building snowmen. I didn’t mind the snow but didn’t love it as much as they did. More hay feeding for me.

Lots of cow work this week. On Wednesday we penned a herd of over 150 head into the barn for sorting. After picking out about 15 of the nicest heifers to breed and keep as momma cows, we then cut out about 50 of the biggest end that will go to harvest over the next few months. There were a few younger cows with baby calves needing tagged that got mixed into this group as well. Hallie was proud to band one of the bull calves unassisted.

After the sorting, we ran them back out the road to turn them out into different fields. With daylight fading faster than we could get them all turned out, a couple groups were left in the barn overnight, then turned out yesterday morning. We don’t get a lot of traffic on our country roads, but we appreciate the few neighbors who waited patiently on cows going up the road.

The highlight of the week for me was a tea party dinner organized by Wren. Instead of tea, the teapot was filled with chocolate milk. With no room at the tea party table for grown ups, Amy and I enjoyed a meal almost to ourselves at the big table. I tried to convince her that it should count as one of our dates. Request denied. Ha.

Lots of freezer work on the agenda for today. Several deliveries coming up next week. It’s not too late to order an ORVF Christmas bundle if you have someone in the family that’s hard to shop for.

While feeding hay on the tractor, I’ve been listening to The Paleo Cardiologist: The Natural Way to Heart Health by Jack Wolfson, recommended by one of our Abingdon Farmer’s Market customers. Here’s a few quotes from what I’ve listened to so far:

“There is no amount of education that can replace one simple fact… Stop poisoning your body and you will enjoy phenomenal health and energy. It is such common sense.”

“Meat, seafood, nuts, seeds, and eggs do not raise blood sugar. I challenge my diabetes patients to drink a glass of olive oil or eat a half dozen eggs and see what happens with their blood sugar. It barley moves. Eat a slice of wholewheat bread and watch your blood sugar skyrocket.”

“1) Eat organic and definitely no gmo or genetically modified foods… 5) No electronics at the table. Make meals a time of relaxation and conversation… 9) Eat at home where food can be prepared healthy, and it’s cheaper too.”

“If pesticides kill bugs and herbicides kill plants, those chemicals will kill us.”

“The pill for every ill mentality must stop. The human body is the best pharmacy as it knows exactly what to produce at exactly the right time. Just put in the correct fuel.”

“Take away the cause of the problem and the body will heal itself.”

Have a good week.
